His life improves ultimately out of saying "YES", He gets a girl and a promotion, the character does have an evolution process from introvert at the beginning with low self-esteem, to a confident happy Extrovert at the end. You should of mentioned the Character Arc of Carl. That lifts the film 'one star' up even in itself.
