Speak up, speak out. This has NOTHING to do with our elections. It cannot be allowed to go unchallenged by the citizens of this country.

Disproportionate responses against aggression, targeting mainly CIVILIANS, can never be justified, no matter WHO is doing it.
I would recommend that people watch the following video as well, in order to gain a larger perspective on this issue:

Cheers from the Wall Street Journal

Just very briefly: actually, I am an American citizen, but I was not born here. And as such, I feel a great deal of shame as what my adoptive country has been up to. As 'naturalized' citizen, I thus took an oath to defend the Constitution, the same oath that certain public officials are bound by. Therefore, it is my responsibility to speak up and speak out, when violations take place.

I saw a segment about massive internet gambling fraud on "60 Minutes" a few weeks back and I remember thinking at the time that this was the perfect opportunity for some idiot politician to over-react. Have you seen "The Last King of Scotland"? I will never think of Uganda again without thinking of that movie. Turkey just recently closed down YouTube because of one video that made fun of their beloved national hero "Ataturk".

As expected, the Internet is under seige. This is its testimony as a potentially powerful force. I sent you a video about a bill to ban online gambling. Censorship always begins with the "lower" elements of society. Did you know that the Internet is banned in Uganda? It's because it provides access to gay materials! Hard to believe, but it's true. Poor Uganda will remain staid in its primitive state while other nations move forward.

The numbing down is enhanced by the corporate media. It's easier to manipulate audiences that are in a trance. At any given time, I can sit in front of the television and find myself constantly flipping the channels for lack of something nuturing. And how many book readers do you see who are indulging in something serious or challenging? Anti-intellectualism has always been a large streak in the American character. Mark Twain noticed it.

The thing that really gives me hope is the promise of the internet. If every home had a high speed connection, if we had WiFi everywhere, if every student had a laptop, just think of it! I remember back in the 70's, 80's and even the 90's, when someone would make an outrageous claim in a group setting, the "group-think" would be, "Only God knows for sure". Now, when someone says something that sounds like B.S., I can do an internet search and find out if I have a gap in my knowledge base.
By: cortmeister262. on 06 Jan 09, 21:35:03
When did this numbing (or dumbing down) start? People have always had options to ignore politics and world events and get lost in there pastime activities, be it gambling, reading dimestore novels or listening to Lil' Orphan Annie instead of Edward R Murrow on the radio. I think it really kicked in with Ronald Reagan. He cut the funding for colleges in Ca. when he was Governor, he started the trend of anti-intellectualism. Then as President, we saw the rise of cable TV with and info-tainment.

One of the prerequisits for a totalitarian system to gain a foothold is for the people to feel helpless is effecting any significant change. The USA is evolving in that direction. I hope I'm wrong.
By: BeatBuddy. on 06 Jan 09, 07:40:18
George Carlin answered that. Americans have collectively and subliminally been numbed to the point that they don't question anything anymore. It would be redundant to say how dangerous that is. Theodor Rozek said Americans are being amused, through technological gadgets, into complacency.

of course, silence always = complicity, it's so easy keeping his mouth shut in many cases !!!! so comfortable not to hear, and not to talk !!!!
By: cortmeister262. on 06 Jan 09, 07:30:45
SILENCE = COMPLICITY Great video, anyone who would criticize your lovely robe isn't worth wasting time on. I don't know why more Americans aren't outraged by what this President and his Administration have done to the country, our troops, our economy, to the world; and all in our name. How many Americans know the name John Woo? According to Mr. Woo, the President can torture a child by crushing his testicles (sic) in order to get info from the parent. Who are we and what have we become?

This will prove an interesting test to see if Obama is his own man. Will he bring anybody to trial from the last administration for war crimes or will the issue be fudged? Will the US leave Iraq or close Guantanemo? More troops are going to Afghanistan, will that lead to a protracted Vietnam style situation?

(1.) Torture doesn't work! Even the Pentagon experts and the former Soviets who devised many of the current techniques tell us this! (2.) it brings us down to the level of the animal-like barbarity we are fighting against. (3.) Getting to the root causes of terrorism - extreme poverty and disenfranchisement - is a big part of the answer. (4.) Prior & leading up to 9-11-01 the U.S. FBI head(s) dropped the ball,& fired key people working on the investigations. Prevention of arrogance comes 1st.
By: chuckkottke. on 20 Dec 08, 21:38:11
Rumsfeld was the torture insister, from the Frontline videos. Cheney too? UGH! Barbarity that goes against the very intent of the US Constitution!! They should be tried for their crimes; torture turns us into what we fight against, just as "burning a village to save a village" did during Vietnam. I've asked my representatives to try them for their crimes, but the response is either "too many other issues to disrupt the system that much" or "that would be partisan warfare".. But I hear ya!

9/11 is created to justify national guilt.
By: onemanband1963. on 20 Dec 08, 07:00:39
Very well stated and I echo your sentiments regarding torture.
By: Bassmarko. on 19 Dec 08, 10:53:22
This is a grey area for me. I would be pissed if my family was hurt or killed because we didnt try to get the information we needed. What if a hundred thousand people would be killed? I know there should be a limit but where do you draw the line. Dont ask because you might offend the terrorist. I guess you could hold back food till they talked. Maybe we should sit in a circle and talk about our feelings. I think there are some really bad people out there and we need to protect our families.

so far my Mom in Ohio has been ok too! but i am concerned for those who still don't have power and you are right most people are not prepared for long term survival. SAD!

Um, that kind of BEHAVIOR ella, I think God is doing the recriminations with the new world order bunch,Only one month and a new Administration takes over, slowly, our wounds will heal, our mob mentally of careless and callouseness will fade into a healing reality of community, respect and compassion, OK, I can only hope, you speak important things, but I need a bright spot to look forward to, rather than fall into apathy and despair.
By: Coachman38. on 19 Dec 08, 00:43:17
Part 2, Torture, Love Ya" Ella, but nothing is going to change, being X-Mil. I can tell you that it is to embedded into our society, Movies, TV, Video Games, it didn't happen 8 yr's ago, and if one where to go back and really research all of our President's, and all of our history, it would make one very frightening movie. Torture is just part of the beast like they would say, and most only care about going to sleep at night and being safe. LOL
By: Coachman38. on 19 Dec 08, 00:28:13
Ella you look foxy as usual sitting in a bathrobe but lets get to facts, look at tv, it is a dumbing down of the American public with movies like "24" and there are many others were torture is the only way to save us from terrorist's, and it as been supported since man decided he needed info from the enemy, look at some of the old western's, all people care about is, do what ever you have to keep ME' the American people, safe from ANYONE who would kill ME"
