What other rapper do you know who is considered a legend and icon of Hip Hop that would rate another rapper that was out years after him and who he is probably lyrically better than, as BETTER THAN HIMSELF. What rapper says that someone is better than them in an interview, are you crazy? Your favorite rapper sure won't.

Hip Hop artist ... By: ludacrisboii. on 01 Nov 08, 00:58:55 Hip Hop artist write about their environment, Tupac Shakur wrote about the environment of the 90s in L.A. and the Bay Area, the artist's you are talking about are on the east coast in the 80s... maybe because i live in the west coast i can relate to him more and vice versa you get what im saying?
i would argue he ... By: ithet. on 31 Oct 08, 10:07:37 i would argue he isn't even hip-hop but rather just a 'rapper'. he doesn't even engage the other elements of the culture.
perhpas if i came into hip-hop later i would see whatall the fuss is about but to me he's just another rapper in a long line but who somehow through his sentimental themes, good looks and corporate marketing he managed to capture the hearts of adolescents who weren't aware of what came before him.
Okay first of all ... By: ludacrisboii. on 31 Oct 08, 03:25:07 Okay first of all KRS-One is the biggest Hypocrite in Hip-Hop, lets get that straight... I like his music but he is a Hypocrite... Second, Tupac's style on how he gave the message and portrayed young black youth was different to Chuck D, KRS-One etc, and has a mother smoother flow... I'm not sure where you are trying to go with this, maybe your trying to argue that Tupac wasn't a good Hip-Hop artist because to me he should be in the top 3

he was a poet but ... By: ithet. on 30 Oct 08, 19:17:41 he was a poet but he didn't bring anything new to the table except the term "thuglife" (he weren't even the first thug rapper though). sure he did other types of stuff but none of it was innovative to the game. his poetry themes on the struggles of young black men can be found in earlier MC's such as Brother J, Chuck D, KRS-One, Double Trouble and a bunch of man who weren't as photogenic as Tupac and not trained actors and tbus did not get the same acclaim.
Tupac was a poet, ... By: ludacrisboii. on 30 Oct 08, 18:19:19 Tupac was a poet, obviously if you think the only thing he brought to rap was thug life you only listened to tracks like hit em up etc... Listen to some more of his songs, maybe a whole album, its some real hip hop because hip-hop was meant for the people and he is rapping about the people and the struggles of young black men... Shorty Wanna Be A Thug was a good track that summed up what i just said...

1, Rakim - takes himself too seriously but when you analyse his lyrics, he's just as abstract as Keith.
2, KRS-One - smug, self-contradictory.
3, Jay-Z - engineered image, albums follow linear trajectory with little deviation from marcy to madison sq concept.
4, Nas - sounds miserable all the time.
5, B.D.K - no longevity/prolificity suggests weakness of character.
you won't find many ... By: ithet. on 30 Oct 08, 13:12:00 you won't find many people who rate tupac that were listening to hip-hop before he came out. in the whole context of the last 30yrs of hip-hop the only new thing tupac bought to the game was the term "thug life" and being an actor/dancer/drama school graduate that doesn't really carry much authenticity coming from him. tupace was simply not innovative. tupac is for girls.

Ok, but you makin' ... By: PlatinumBD. on 27 Nov 08, 15:15:03 Ok, but you makin' it seem like FLOW defines hip-hop, when it don't. If your lyrics are wack, you will get eaten up, good flow or not. Lyricism has to come with flow. And you say "you'll learn" just because I'm younger don' mean i don't know my stuff. I mean, i know you have to have flow, but lyrics are a big thing too. Like you said, you had better be saying something, and make sense. Just because you can flow, that alone dont cut it.
You may be a ... By: pointsur. on 27 Nov 08, 06:30:19 You may be a lyrical geek son, but you aren't in step with how we did it. We had flow, as well as lyrics. If you could flow all day that's fine, but in MY day, you had better be saying something with a little substance. The people in our circles were the toughest critics. Too bad none are around today. One excercise we applied was taking an unread magazine, looking at it page for page, and tell a story fitting all of the pages' content together. It HAD to flow, and make sense. You'll learn.

Ok, when you ... By: PlatinumBD. on 26 Nov 08, 05:13:28 Ok, when you FREESTYLE your flow is a big part, and most nowadays have no flow. At all. But when people say this is the best lyrical performance in history, that kicks the FLOW aside. I'm a lyrical geek, i love complex, technical lyrics. Multisyllabic lyrics, love them. So in that matter, no, this song is not the best lyrical performance in history. FLOW and LYRICS are two seperate things. In a freestyle, it's how you flow, but when you in the lab, and have time to write it, it's lyrics man.
Young brother, as ... By: pointsur. on 25 Nov 08, 23:31:01 Young brother, as an old school man from the streets that used to rap, it is all about HOW you FLOW, and how you put your words together. Most cats today freestyle and CANNOT stay with the beat. Back in the day, that was a no-no. Kane IS a technician. Even the cats you mentioned, MOST could not keep pace with Kane's delivery. He was ahead of his time, he laid the groundwork for others to follow. Most of today's rappers have credited Kane for inspiring them. Don't over-analyze my man.

It's a guarantee that you would rather go to a luke party than a new york party.Unless you don't like girls. The south has bass concertos that make you want to dance and hump a girl.See down south we like to hump and that's why Florida's shaped like a d***.
Also keep in mind that jazz and blues and all black people came from the south and migrated to the north.Study before you stereotype the south.

So on and so on...Its the new school, period. The problem with hip hop is that you got ex-hustlers who saw how the culture was booming musically and decided to extort the culture as if it were drugs. And just as you have no respect for the drug your selling, these extortionists in hip hop on the corporate and mc levels have no respect for hip hop but only money. holla

Where is hip-hop ... By: oldskoolhiphop84. on 02 Dec 08, 07:36:42 Where is hip-hop today? For those who listen only see it as being gansta, thugish, or living the mafioso styles. Sad to see but it is really takeing the true message away from what hip-hop stands for. It is a dope beat complimenting the mood and what the lyrics stand for. "A Tribe Called Quest" are one of the few that stood for this. It is a love for making music and always a story to tell. Growing up during rough times is always a hardship to bear but being positive is a way to get there.

By: Aphoresis. on 02 Dec 08, 13:33:48
Umm Rakim takes himself less seriously than any other Hip Hop artist i have ever seen, are you kidding me? have you ever seen how humble the guy is in interviews? What other rapper do you know who is considered a legend and icon of Hip Hop that would rate another rapper that was out years after him and who he is probably lyrically better than, as BETTER THAN HIMSELF. What rapper says that someone is better than them in an interview, are you crazy? Your favorite rapper sure won't.

Hip Hop artist write about their environment, Tupac Shakur wrote about the environment of the 90s in L.A. and the Bay Area, the artist's you are talking about are on the east coast in the 80s... maybe because i live in the west coast i can relate to him more and vice versa you get what im saying?
By: ithet. on 31 Oct 08, 10:07:37
i would argue he isn't even hip-hop but rather just a 'rapper'. he doesn't even engage the other elements of the culture. perhpas if i came into hip-hop later i would see whatall the fuss is about but to me he's just another rapper in a long line but who somehow through his sentimental themes, good looks and corporate marketing he managed to capture the hearts of adolescents who weren't aware of what came before him.
By: ludacrisboii. on 31 Oct 08, 03:25:07
Okay first of all KRS-One is the biggest Hypocrite in Hip-Hop, lets get that straight...
By: ithet. on 30 Oct 08, 19:19:38
and what would you know about anything to be making a comment eh ? can you remember Jay in 86 spittin flows that noone else had even attempted. Search "gettin busy high potent" and have a listen.
By: ithet. on 30 Oct 08, 19:17:41
he was a poet but he didn't bring anything new to the table except the term "thuglife" (he weren't even the first thug rapper though). sure he did other types of stuff but none of it was innovative to the game. his poetry themes on the struggles of young black men can be found in earlier MC's such as Brother J, Chuck D, KRS-One, Double Trouble and a bunch of man who weren't as photogenic as Tupac and not trained actors and tbus did not get the same acclaim.
By: ludacrisboii. on 30 Oct 08, 18:19:19
Tupac was a poet, obviously if you think the only thing he brought to rap was thug life you only listened to tracks like hit em up etc... Listen to some more of his songs, maybe a whole album, its some real hip hop because hip-hop was meant for the people and he is rapping about the people and the struggles of young black men... Shorty Wanna Be A Thug was a good track that summed up what i just said...

a decent and considered top 5. the negative characteristics of each of your top 5 would be - 1, Rakim - takes himself too seriously but when you analyse his lyrics, he's just as abstract as Keith. 2, KRS-One - smug, self-contradictory. 3, Jay-Z - engineered image, albums follow linear trajectory with little deviation from marcy to madison sq concept. 4, Nas - sounds miserable all the time. 5, B.D.K - no longevity/prolificity suggests weakness of character.

you won't find many people who rate tupac that were listening to hip-hop before he came out. in the whole context of the last 30yrs of hip-hop the only new thing tupac bought to the game was the term "thug life" and being an actor/dancer/drama school graduate that doesn't really carry much authenticity coming from him. tupace was simply not innovative. tupac is for girls.
