Are the female bettas sisters? Did you cycle that tank before you set it up?

Great tank, i have 2 x 5 gal tanks at the moment and they are divided, each housing 1 single male betta, they are happy, heated and filtered and loving life! I rescued one from a tiny freezing smelly cup, he is soo much happier!

The first divider I got was bought from Petsmart, but it doesn't work too well b/c the holes in it don't allow for water to flow through very well. So I took the blue parts that hold the divider snug to the tank wall and replaced the plastic middle part with some needlepoint mesh I got from Walmart for something like 30something cents. Really cheap. You can get different colors as well if you don't want white at a hobby shop. Works great b/c it's sturdy and the holes are bigger.

Normally my two mollies are quite calm and just chill out....like a lazy person on the couch :P I see you have yours divided...how did you do that and how much did it cost? If my betta gets teased or gets agressive I could always take out the mollies and put them in with the goldfish until I am able to get to walmart or petsmart to buy either a 5 or a 10 gallon aquarium.

Yep, that's what I mean. Just make sure that the other fish aren't too flashy, such as colorful platy, or guppies, etc... and make sure they're not known to be nippy. The only thing I would worry about with your current 10gal would be the mollies. If a male would see them as another betta b/c of fins or color. If you feel more comfy getting another tank though, then go for it. It's always fun getting a new tank :)

Ahh, I see. I have two mollies already in the 10 gallon aquarium....I don't want to overstock the tank. Are you meaning if I get a separate tank to add other fish before I add the betta?
By: shollia. on 22 Sep 08, 00:58:08
It might be best to add another fish first, and then add the betta. That way, the betta would hopefully think of the fish already in the tank as part of the tank. If the betta was already in the tank, and you added fish, he might see it as the other fish invading his territory. If that makes any sense. In the end it's up to you w/ what you want to do. :) I think it would be ok to try out the betta in your current tank, but as said before, just make sure to have a backup if necessary.

Do you think it would be better to get a 10 gallon tank and just have the betta in it from day one? then eventually trying to a fish to the betta tank?
By: shollia. on 21 Sep 08, 22:25:27
You could try it out though, but if you do, make sure you have a backup tank or something just in case if you get an aggressive male or the other fish nip him. Watch the tank closely for about 2 weeks to make sure the betta isn't getting nipped and that the betta isn't being aggressive towards the other fish. If either is happening, seperate asap.

It really depends on the betta. Some are more calm than others and wont mind tankmates, while others are way too aggressive. The thing to worry about w/ male bettas in a community tank, are the other fish. Bettas' long flowing fins are very attractive to other fish, and bettas cant move quickly so theyre easy for other fish to nip. ...to be continued...

Ahh, I see. I want to get myself a regular male betta to add to my 10 gallon tank which has two(1 inch) dalmatian mollies and 1 pleco (an algae eater but not the kind that gets really big. When it gets bigger I am going to add the pleco to my 29 gallon. Maximum size is about 5 inches) Will a make betta do well?

A female betta tank is commonly refered to as a "sorority". Unlike males, you can put females together, but only if they're not too aggressive b/c sometimes you will come across a female that is not tolerant of anything like the males are. It's best to have them in no less than a 10gal, and to have an absolute minimum of 4... 6-8 being the ideal so aggression is spread among them more evenly. With males, only 1 (with no other bettas, male or female) is the way to go.

are female bettas allowed several together and males just one? or no

Wish I could say that this tank is doing well, but I just had to put down the male betta yesterday. It all started with 1 girl getting sick, and 1 right after the other followed and died. I tryed everything I could, but I just couldn't save them :( I think I'm going to convert this tank in to a dwarf puffer tank and just focus on 1 betta at a time (still have another in a 5gal). Just too heartbreaking to keep losing them like I have no matter if I do everything right.

They get to about 3 inches long.. if that. so they don't get too large. There are 'giant' bettas though. But even they don't get too large. There are people who say they've had 7 inch bettas but then never give proof :\

is a betta a big fish or a little fish?
By: shollia. on 21 Apr 08, 16:37:40
You can get them online. We're lucky enough to have a decent fish shop sorta near us that carries aquatic plants. You should try to find one around where you live. Call them up and ask if they carry aquatic plants :) I know Petsmart also carry aquatic plants, but you have to be careful b/c not all of the ones they sell are true aquatic and they usually have snails all over them.

Great Betta tank, I'm part way through setting up a betta tank, not sure that I like the plants I have in mine yet, but yours are superb!
