sure during the emergency develera was offeredd the 6 counties in ulster if he join britain in world war 2 and he refused! he started a civil war over not getten the six counties and then wen offered he saw that it was better t leave them 2 britain! if he had of saw sence in time there probably wouldnt off been a civil war and collins wudn of died meaning ireland lost one of its ablest leaders when it could of been easily avoided!

At the end of the day they couldn't have got northern Ireland even if the English had agreed. There would have always been war between Republicans and unionsts in the north no matter what. Collins played a ital role in securing 26 free countie. The fact that people can stand here and critscise hm is terrible without him we would have been still under brittish control.
By: sweetie4life07. on 13 Jul 08, 18:56:42
Collins? How was Collind a scourge to Ireland. He was sent to make the decision the english did not allow him to return to discuss it ith Develera. He was told if he did not sign the treaty war would be declared on Ireland. Ireland at the time would not hae been able to beet Britain in a war. He took the best option he could. For if he hadn'r Ireland would have been destroyed and would have had no chance of regaining independancy

Personnelly I ahern got off lightly I could think of alot worse thinks he is guilty of, the tribunel was just a way for him to get out of office and at least maintain some degree of credability.
By: 01LOWSONM. on 10 May 08, 22:08:17
By whats happened to poor Bertie over the last month, the Fianna Fail's dragons are out, As a Brit I wish Brian Cowen the best of luck but I think the way Ahearn has been removed as Taoiseach has been very bad (unsurprisingly done well away from the next Dail election)

Dev was born in Hoboken in New Jersey..His mother came from Bruree In Limerick,His Father came from Spanish blood. He was in fact An American citizen, this saved him and recieved a pardon from execution...I think Dev was actually in Awe of Collins and disliked the fact Collins was a far more capable republican and politition than of himself...
By: WESTCORKBOY. on 10 Apr 08, 00:55:53
quite correct!!
By: TheRealPuffPaddy. on 09 Apr 08, 18:42:24
I'm just saying that was a little cowardly from Dev, especially from a guy who as you say fought on the front line in 1916(is it true he wasn't Killed like the others because of his transatlantic links). One of the main things I dislike him about was not his policies and decisions which were not always for the best of the country- but the fact that he set himself up for a nice retirement by putting in the post of Presidennt

Nay this debate is becoming abit of a pisser, all i can say is I would favour the old fianna fail rather than fine gael or cumann na gael thats all i sayin on this, its all past tense. Theres new problems facing this country in the present day.
