Rolling Stone actually put vampire weekend as #10. #11 went to Fleet Foxes (another band I love!)

They are all Ivy League kids...and I believe that they all graduated. I dig their sounds, and the infusion of the African stuff that they do. Like them or not, Rolling Stone just put their album as #11 for 2008...

Yes, but to be influenced by something is different from copying something. The talking heads were influenced by Afrobeat; putting it into pop (with their own melodies) was original. . The "nothing is original" argument is an excuse for artistic laziness. How old are you, BTW?
By: WAHLSTROM1967. on 06 Jan 09, 23:18:49
Its also called influences! I think they are great and original anyway. Music has allways been influenced by earlier music. I mean imagine writing music, how do you actually know if your idea is original or something you heard drunk in a bar 10 years earlier!
By: joehogan212. on 06 Jan 09, 22:52:08
Maybe Vampire Weekend's music is about copying, but I suspect that the Talking Heads and other artists VW copy were actually trying to be original.
By: WAHLSTROM1967. on 06 Jan 09, 22:09:54
Music is about copying !? One main but short part in Mansard roof is from "A persian market"
By: joehogan212. on 06 Jan 09, 22:05:52
This is a good song. But they stole that one riff from the Talking Heads. Find the bootleg of "Remain in Light" Eldorado Outtakes and you'll hear for yourself.

in either case, hipster do ruin being a music nut.

This vid is amazing! is it a parody, it must be, i love it, pure genius!..whistfully looking out the window...love it!
By: zoebro201. on 06 Jan 09, 12:41:56
i have to disagree...hipsters are more about breaking away from their peers...in fact most of them relish the idea of doing/wearing/listening things that their parents may have when they were younger. (not that i would ever call myself a hipsters...a bunch of posers ruining it for the rest of us)
By: zoebro201. on 06 Jan 09, 12:38:58
don't be ignorant...its good to be artistically aware and subjective. a little reflection and education never hurt anyone.
By: stickfigure311. on 06 Jan 09, 07:23:42
why does everybody insist on comparing them to other bands? who gives a shit if it has a similar sound, it's unique and it's kick-ass so suck it.
By: mikebott. on 06 Jan 09, 07:05:26
hipsters need to nourish the feeling that they've broken with their parent's music, that's why. sorry lads, orange juice did the indie + afrobeat thing a hell of a lot better more than 20 years ago...

Sounds like Paul Simon's "Graceland". Why people hate Paul Simon and seem to find VW cool is beyond me.
By: hagrid3689. on 05 Jan 09, 20:30:29
They played this song on the radio so much this past summer, I literally heard it like 10 times a day. I just now bought the album though because I realized how much I liked all of their music.
