Hey! Please forgive me if my english isn't very good, I'll do my very best. ;-) A good friend of mine who lives about four hours by train away from me joined a capoeira training group in his hometown about two years ago. when we meet which is about every 3-4 months, he always talks about it, he also showed me some of what he's exactly training there. The original intent of capoeira was not to become a "martial art" or a fighting style. seriously, it would be pretty ridiculous if anyone would jinga in an actual fight, not to mention you would be projecting your every movement that. My professor taught me that capoeira wasn't even meant to a competitive art, but a way to free and express ones self and to educate others. Listen to the various songs of capoeira, they tell stories. It teaches malicia and malemdragem.

In responce to "golenjinam" What your watching here is a "Capoeria Game" It's a type of Sparing(Practice) and desplay of skill. It's not fighting, at least this isn't. When Capoeria is applied in the "Martial Arts" form(For the sake of hurting someone or Kicking there Ass) you won't see all these Back Flips and Somersaul. You'll see some pretty skillful martail arts. All thought Capoeira is more offenceive then deffensive.

show me one vid where some capoeira ''fighter'' beats muay thai fighter or kickboxer and then I'll agree with you. and I don't see any ''down'' of muay thai, we use knees and elbows that's not any flashy moves like whole capoeira (and TKD, Shotokan karate etc) is about. sure it depends on fighter, but some styles are just for show, like capoeira, but not for real fighting.. have you ever seen any capoeira fighter in K1 or UFC? guess not

I've trained capoeira and fought capoeristas. It is viable and effective as any other martial art if wielded by a decent practitioner. The fellow in this video...well he just sucked. I've also fought and trained Muay Thai, TKD, and Kenpo. it's about the practitioner. I know some capoeristas who could hold thier own in any forum.

Any fighting style will work the problem are people who aren't warriors in the first place try martial arts and aren't coordinated enough to win a fight anyway I train in capoeira and muay thai there is no difference when you have reached an elite level in martial arts in fact when I spar fighters mainly using capoeira they basically don't know what to do to counter because capoeira has a broader range for attacking....

Talk to a teacher that focuses exclusively on self-defense and they'll tell you that you never, but never, assume that your opponent is anything other than dangerous. Thinking you've got an easy ride can get you killed. In my experience, matches and real fights are ALWAYS harder than you think.

A whole world of difference man, too political to comment here, but if you have an eye for Capoeira, you can tell the differences. People think they are similar styles just because they both stem from senzala, but when both parties went both ways, each one developed their own Capoeira, some similarities, but that's it. I would say 10 % only. Both groups are 20 years old in average, in those 20 years apart their Capoeira changed. Wthout further words, let the videos do the talking.

I guess I can take a stab at it. Think about using martial arts in a street fight in general. You would want to end the fight as quick as possible so you would use the most effective moves, and leave out the unnecessary ones(for example, the Mei Luia de Frente in Capoeira). Also keep in mind that you wouldn't have time to do a majority of moves in a street fight, because they're not as clean (or choreographed)like the movies, but I'm sure you knew that already.

I have no experience in capoeira but after seeing many street fights I cant see this being very effective. Im not saying its not a good martial art but in a street fight, its seems to just be two fighter trying to punch as fast as they can with little accuracy, just my opinion.

Well, Kung Fu is about 5000 years old. Capoeira's style is circular mostly. However it does have rhythmn. The attacks can't be as varying and rapid as Kung Fu. Also Capoeira mostly utilize their legs as primary attack. While Kung Fu on the other hand uses the entire body.
