Thanks for your comment: depending on the role she sounds like an angel from the heavens with her glorious, plangent and sustained top, and yet with some of her coloratura, her vocal production can sound like barking. I've posted critical comments of some of the Fleming videos here on ytube, and just raves about others. You're right: it depends on the suitability of the voice and temperament to the role, and matters of taste.

Thanks for answering. That makes perfect sense. I love the sound of Renee's voice, but it's purely a matter of taste, isn't it? I also think that it depends upon the piece and even upon the particular performance.

I often visit the videos of performers I do not prefer, to see if perhaps I will find something to appreciate that I have not found before. This has led me to a greater appreciation for the technique of Ms. Fleming, but I still do not care for the sound of her voice. My favorite sopranos are Gundula Janowitz, Mirella Freni, Christa Ludwig and Callas

Why such nasty comments about those of us who do not adore Ms. Fleming? I think her style and performance are perfection --- however, I do not care for the sound of her voice. Does that make me a horrible person?

It's often worth checking out people's recommendations. I still prefer Fleming, Callas, Caballé, and Tebaldi.

I've been listeting a lot of version of Ebben? I think the best are Fleming, Tebaldi, Caballé y Brightman! and obviously Callas. The don't like the versions of Gorghieu, Nebrebtko Kiwara(I don't know the right spelling)

I've listened closely several times, and have a problem discerning anything that isn't simply part of the expression I have grown to know and lvoe from Ms. Fleming. But I am getting older . . . perhaps the road trip got to her a little, but this is one of the more difficult vocals for a soprano. And that incredible high! What a voice! Best, Chuck

I adore her artistry but such glotal sounds were heard in this clip.. I wonder if she was having some vocal problems that night! I think even as a professional singer its important for me not to be so judgemental on my peers and idols simply because we are not machines.. its not going to be perfect EVERYTIME!! And being on the road and having to be the best I totally understand what can happen to the voice!!
