Actually most of the Monkees early work was done by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. They were the real talent behind the scenes. Mickey Dolenz and Davy Jones had their voices added later. Towards the end of the series the real monkees started to shine through. I'm not sure about the Beachboys. Last Train to Clarksville is an anti-war song about someone setting off for Vietnam not knowing if he'll return. Boyce and Hart were guests on shows like I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched

Well, I think Peter was actually the best musician, he could play about 12 instruments. But yes, it really frustrated Mike that they couldn't play their own instruments. Micky eventually learned the drums and he could already play the guitar when the Monkees began. Davy couldn't play any instrument, but he learned the guitar during the Monkees.

I love Mike Nesmith. I was a kid when this band (TV show) got started, and he was always really embarrassed about it because he WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD PLAY. Ha ha. He was called "green-hat". But Mickey, couldn't play but he had a great voice. I used to hear about how in concert, it was the Beachboys who actually played. And now that I think of it, also the harmonies sound like them. But, when I was a kid, the MONKEES were my heroes... and the songs were great....
