hand-drawn holograms

Video duration: 179 seconds

see http://amasci.com/ho lo/ Scratch-holograms can be made on CD cases using a couple of thumbtacks poked through a stick. Or get fancy and use a professional compass and black painted polycarbonate. Or automate the process with a paperclip stuck into a motorized electric eraser.

I'm impressed by that. I see no practical use for this technique, but I am impressed that it can be done at all.

> Are you in school? Development of "abrasion holos" came from a fight on sci.physics and Eaton-CH opto sensors division. I found the effect, and said "wow, this is how Rainbow Holos work." People said, "no it's not, since you can't have opaque objects." I saw that real holography won't create opaque objects either, unless the million gabor zoneplates have holes from shadows of foreground objects. So the scratches must become complicated dotted lines. Or at least have fixed starts/ends.

> did you duo the 123 box. Lots of techniques explained at tinyurl com/9bs97w Scratches for the "square hole" were made normally. Then I figured out where to start/end each scratch forming the numbers... for every two horizontally-adjacent scratches, if there is a spot where both are parallel, that's the spot where the two visible dots will pass through each other. So, end the background obj scratch there, so the dot turns off when going behind the "edge" of a foreground obj.

Cool. How long did these take you? Are you in school? Shouldve gotten extra credit for that, haha. Argh, science, you cheap whore. This works for anyone if you try hard enough.

That's pretty cool.. I like to collect weird things and if I could create something like that.. Would be interesting to have around the house.. Glad I subscribed to you. You have lots of interesting things.

> Did you invented that by yourself?? Yes, but another guy discovered it in 1979, but he kept it secret. And in 1992 two scientists published about an accidental one similar to the "car hood hologram" caused by dirty lambskin mitts.
By: expendedAmmunition. on 03 Dec 08, 05:24:04
absolutely brilliant!

AHH! It all makes sense now! I made a simple one of a small "deeper" square inside a large "shallower" square and it looks great! Thank you so much!

> 1. What is the plastic It's a good idea to check out the website. Click on the URL in the text caption, or look at the video title. Plastic CD cases work well. Or lexan or plexi. > a line seeming to delve deeper in to virtual space? Yep. Vinyl records and CDs already do just that.
By: dannyb21892. on 17 Nov 08, 02:17:05
Just a couple of questions: 1. What is the plastic used in the video and where can one buy it? 2. (just to see if i understand the basic concept) if I make different size arcs all originating from the same point, the resulting image will be a line seeming to delve deeper in to virtual space?
By: flashback1234. on 16 Nov 08, 23:01:36
Did you invented that by yourself?? Because that is amazing!
By: dannyb21892. on 16 Nov 08, 18:53:39
that ingenious! I didn't get it at first but you provided a great explanation. I can't wait to try! Thanks a ton!
By: Hypermobilemind. on 13 Nov 08, 01:25:18
you could even make colored holograms by having the scratches at different depth on a multi colored plane. i wonder if you could make a looping animation by dynamically scratching the plane on the other side as well, and putting a lamp behind it as a light source.

If it was a soft material, maybe your tech would be cool to make it onto the garment surfact.(I just draw my imagination and maybe it isn't feasible. Dont take it serious plz. :))

> HOw did u do that? Check out the webpage. A plastic DVD or CD case works best.
