I will not be drawn one way or another on training in dressage as: 1. I only compete once a year and only ride at weekends so don't have much experience, and 2. I don't think that one method of training is neccessarily better than the other. Surely you can be classical and use parts of modern training and vice versa, or do people get so hung up on this argument that they are blind to the opinions and biews of others?

PS Dr Heuschmann's DVD is not about correct riding- he is a German vet who is very anti hyperflexion and the 'show trot'. He is a qualified Bereiter, but did not himself, ride on the DVD- it is purely about biomechanics and the damage that is inflicted by incorrect training, and should be watched by anyone who wishes to train a horse.

Split post again :-) What I don't get is how ,if you don't use the seatbones to help engage the hindlegs, will you keep the back nice and subtle in the first place. I post ca. 15 min and then start sitting and well..really working my horse. It's like if I don't use the seatbones to really rev up that engine beneath me nothing works. Any ideas?

The way you explain it makes total sense. Thank you. I admit that yes, my legs are not always quiet which is why I usually put a little wax on the inside of my boots. Still, my horses back (maybe I should add that I have a very big warmblood on which you sit like on a barrel) is always swinging and though his movements are huge (think QEII) he's a dream to sit on when warmed up correctly. The rise and fall of the back just kind of 'carries' you.

If you have blisters on your bum, you are driving with both seatbones together. The horse's back works in two halves, so if both seatbones are working together, you are blocking the side of the back that is rising. The horse then tends to brace his back upwards, which does build impressive musculature, but is why so many dressage horses are so difficult to sit to! Do your legs ping off the horses sides in sitting trot, for instance, or are they quietly around the horse?

Think about it, would you want to raise your own back if someone was pressing their weight down on it? You might raise it,but much as I might if you, with my legs crossed, said you were going to chop me on the knee, which would produce a reflex response. But if you were to repeat it several times, I would brace my leg and prevent the reflex happening. A horse will do this too, resulting in a braced, rather than supple back.

You keep bringing up the subject of pressure from the seatbones. As someone who uses that a lot (and has the ocassional blisters to proof it *lol*) I'd love to hear your opinion on how else it should be done because I feel like without the aids of my back and abs in combination with the seatbones I couldn't affect the hindlegs and croup quite the same way. I admit to not having watched that particular DVD since there is just so much on the market on the subject of correct riding,classical dressage and whatnot that it's really a little overwhealming. Too many 'experts' show us 'their way' while in reality they practice something completely different when nobody is watching.

Well that just shows how subjective dressage is! But the one thing that doesnt lie is the Pliance computerised pressure testing system. I have done extensive testing with it to measure the pressure of different ways of absorbing the movement, and would love to have the chance to measure Isabel and Adelinde. But all of you who think this is good training, should watch veterinary surgeon, Dr Gerd Heuschmann's DVD 'If Horses Could Talk'.

If she were in sync horse, her riding would not look so stilted and staccato. She is pushing with both seatbones and not allowing them to rise and fall with the two sides of the horse's back. This also causes her legs to ping off the sides. She is pushing so hard with her inside seatbone in the canter half passes that she is leaning out to the other side to counter balance. There is a lot of rowing with the shoulders in canter. The hands do jerk back too, in rhythm with the shoulders.

I respect your judgement - qualified or not; & consider Isabel too a great rider. However I must agree to disagree on your later point - I do see Adelinde biomechanically in sinc; which for me is what made the quality of her performance so consistent/sustainable throughout. Its called an "adhesive seat"; as for the reins preventing her from doing a backflip - absolute nonsense. Her hands are excellent. She is far neater than the majority; only leaning back to use her seat to maximum effect NOT HER REINS!! Adelande - your riding is excellent & should be what we all aspire to. Why does she find it necessary to jerk her shoulders back behind the vertical at every stride, and therefore her hands with them, even in sitting trot? Causing the horse to go vbtv too. Same in canter, rowing with the shoulders . Sorry, what is beautiful about this? If you cut the reins, she would do a back flip, I cannot see the likeness to Gigolo, who Isabel rode on a light contact and sitting far more quietly!!

I'm very impressed! She controls the horse merely with her weight/seat. That's certainly good body tuning! But there's something I don't like... the curb bit's shanks are totally horisontal - not vertical. It puts a great amount of pressure on the horse's tongue. I think she has attached the reins too tight :o(

Hmmm, apparently computer monitor quality varies for the below "commenters" to your entry. She does INDEED have the reins attached to two silver buckles on the front of her pants. see 2:19-2:21 and 2:32-2:47. Clear as DAYLIGHT. It's still amazing...no tail-swishing and the horse does marvelously. Really artistic.

You are correct at the fact that she is a true horsewoman,and beutiful rider.The comment about the reins is also correct.The pommel is much lower than the line if the rein which is in fact,attached to her.She is using her seat and her lower body to direct the horse.Her arm motion also help her steer(her arm and hand movements change her body position)but she does a beautiful job with theatrics to disguise it.The horse is well schooled and the woman is beautiful on a horse.Excellent demonstration

Wonderful performance! Friesians are wonderful for this as they are considered one of the classical (haute ecole) breeds. I work with two young stallions and I can say this breed is very smart and kind. Minimum 300.000 euros for a friesian is a little exagerated but it is the price for an Approved on Offspring Friesian Stallion such as this horse Goffert. And I couldn´t resist saying: vrtego77 is such an ignorant :)

Dressage = long stirrups, Jumper = Short stirrups. Secondly, they're never "too long" unless the feet can't reach them. The piaffe and passage were BEAUTIFIL, with the best part being how low the haunches were and how far under the back legs are. Very rarely do you see these moves done CORRECTLY, like in the video. Modern dressage = disgrace. This = art.

WOW! I am a young rider and I have been riding for about 9 years. I have always wanted to ride like that and be able to do everything that I do with a saddle but bareback. I think it was amazing seeing what you can do with your horse and it demonstrates a real partnership. Also I think that your horse was very relaxed and happy without a saddle.

mental/emotional health of my horses is a priority certain clues: ears, tail, displaced behaviors but cannot be taken in isolation: what is the expression on the face of the human runner as he is doing the race? Perhaps not a general 'happy smile' although the athlete would rather be in that moment than anywhere else! ears forward could mean desperation, ears back could mean focus at liberty and bridleless he has a big opportunity to leave if he does not like it. i am happy he chooses to stay!

wow, amazing movements!! but i would never ever do that to a horse just to make people say 'wow'... most of them look complete nutters, completely corned up to the eyeballs and ready to explode and they looked so scared and so overwilling to preform, obvioulsy a lot of force and more brutal methods are being used behind the scenes, they just looked too tense, poor ponies, well except the draught i dont think he really cared, lol

Where's the harmony, and relaxation..? Isn't that what dressage is about? Half of them look mentally unstable, and the horse performing the numerous capriole's shy's when the guy with the whip gets close to it. I love dressage... Not too sure about this though.

They may not be hurting physically, but mentally most of them are unstable. Very few of them show any relaxation, and the horse doing to numerous capriole's swings it's hind end around every time the guy gets close to it. That not harmony, that's fear.

If you take a week to train your horse for barrels you are both ignorant and abusive. Nothing takes a week to teach. Barrels takes years to train for properly, if you want a horse that isn't gate shy, turns correctly, and stays mentally fit you need to take a lot of time to train for barrels.

Im tellin you right now, it takes hard work for a person to build up muscles, trust me. Now i have done barrel racing, and trust me, its alot more work to do dressage then barrels. 1 week to learn barrels, Years to learn dressage. Ive seen horses become gate shy because all you do is run them, not much training is involved in barrels, but dressage is alot of training. Dont knock the discipline unless you try it!!!

And while he is engaged in the piaffe, he is not very expressive. Look at some of the footage of Seldom Seen from the same time. Gifted's hind feet are barely moving in comparison. It's still gorgeous, but American dressage has improved so much in the last 16 years that it would be interesting to see where this team scored against some of today's top riders.

Long backed horses are not prone to injury. Carol did not have a sloppy seat. The horse was well engaged in piaffe. He does not look like a Clydesdale. He was a heavier type of warmblood. Ms. Lavel said very often that he was very light to ride. He was by the legendary Garibaldi who was a great sire.
