Yeah,Drown got all the airplay, but I agree, "Windfall," and maybe "Loose Strings," caught my, and some of my friends attention more, after buying the CD. Being a strong Neil Young fan, I wasn't surprised to read the comparison of the guitar chords of Son Volt, to his, in Rolling Stone. And the other bands you mention are all part of my collection. I can't stand pop country because it's vapid for the most part. Son Volt, Uncle Tuplo, the Jayhawks, Whiskeytown, et al, got back to reality and old time roots. By and large that was the appeal to fans of 'no depression'. 'Windfall' was the signature track of this album and one of the top 5 tracks of the 90's in my opinion. Even along side rock tracks like "Loose String" and "Route" "Drown" sticks out with a harder edge. Maybe it's just me.

Others songs like, "Tear stained eye," and, "Out of the picture," gave the CD a "country," (which I also like) sound which may be the reason the CD was rated, #9 by Rolling Stone's 1996 critics poll, and #13 by the "Village Voice." I can understand the publics "confusion," about the genre of the CD, which caused low sales. No insult intended.

I think Son Volt was an evolution of Uncle Tupelo, whereas Wilco was something entirely different. I think the earlier Wilco was vastly superior to the last two albums, which are frankly boring as hell. Either way, I prefer Jay and SV.

The best Son Volt lineup and best album. It's tough to debut with one of the best albums of the decade and impress with anything that follows. The funny thing about 'Drown' was how much airplay it got assuming it was pushed by the lable. While a great song I thought if there was a song that didn't fit into the album with the other tracks it was this tune.

ain't it funny how tastes in music change? i loved uncle tupelo, so i bought "trace" by son volt and "being there" by wilco. for whatever reason son volt didn't kick my ass as wilco did and after a month of trying to get into it i gave trace away to a very grateful buddy who didn't dig wilco at the time. wtf, i thought... oh well. now i love it all, ut, sv, and wilco. i still prefer wilco, but that's just me. sometimes it's eggs & bacon, sometimes it's a burger & fries. why throw down? all good!

There is a similarity in the fuzz box distortion, and I guess the verse has a couple of the same harmonies, but they each did such distinct things with the riff right after that the feel of the songs aren't similar at all. IMHO. Funny thing is I "wrote" a song that has this exact same intro and didn't realize until months later where I had stolen the riff from. Of the three, this is easily the best execution of the theme.

I agree his work is very good on the album. I've still always liked Pros and Cons, as well. Clapton plays on that album. I think the bigger reason why that is Waters's best album is that it has -hook- songs. There's no hooks at all in Pros and Cons.

I've never had the chance to see him live until You Tube . When you see how brilliantly he utilizes every part of the instrument simultaneously to create tone,feel and emotion, you can't help but be even more amazed and his man has continuously amazed me for 40 + years. The finest of the "Brit guitar gods".

i think of this performance this way: If this was an 11 year old kid doing this performance, all the guitar heads and music critics all over YouTube would be going apesh|t. Thing is, it's Jeff Beck, doing what he usually does: make brilliant music & sounds & textures. Mr. Beck here is probably pushing 60. But he's been pushing the guitar and music style envelope for the past 40 years, at least. Most 11 year old axe hero prodigies probably don't realize it, but there's a lot of Beck in them.

You all will die when I tell you what show I passed up in the early 90's. Red Hot Chili Peppers was the main act. The opening acts....Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam! Pearl Jam used the show to make thier video alive where Eddie jumps up to the balcony and hangs. That was in St. Louis, Mo at the American (Orphium) theater. They did two shows because the first show sold out so fast..small venue. I kick myself everytime I think about it.

Billy always sounds awesome live. I mean, this is perfect. His voice sounds the same as his studio recordings. The Pumpkins have been my favourite band of all time since I was 13. I have reason to believe that my teen years were all the more memorable because of this band, and because of how strongly they were a part of my life for all that time.
