As a parent and math teacher I have found Everyday Math to provide a strong program which helps students develop "number sense", meaning they do not simply memorize algorithms, but actually understand why the they work. This is critical for students to use what they know to solve new problems or situations. I feel very strongly that kids need to do a certain amount of basic memorization- multiplication tables, etc. I am often shocked at how much high school students rely on calculators.

TERC method is actually very similar to mental math techniques taught in china. expect we had to answer them verbally in class and then prove our answers on the blackboard with the traditional method. Also I wish abacus is taught in schools here, since it really teaches to break complex calculations into simpler ones, and do it very quickly...

It sounds like Everyday Math has a really good foundation in theory. I wish I'd had those extra zeroes; it explicates the theory while requiring minimum extra work. We learned the TERC method in my university (CS-hosted) Algorithms class as the "Russian method," and most in the class wished we had been taught that, instead of the arbitrary-seeming shortcut we learned in elementary school. Then again, in a class on algorithms, you're getting a lot of theory people and fewer practical people.

I loved this! I remember learning all these random methods, and constantly asking "but WHY?! I just want to know how to multiply them together!". I actually did rather poorly in math in elementary school because I didn't understand WHY I needed all of it. For math, you basically just need to know (for middle school): standard multiplication multiplication up to 12 x 12 long division fractions (+, -, /, *) decimals (how to turn them into reg. numbers) This shouldn't be that hard :S Thanks again!

I learnt to use the standard algorithm and they taught us USING PLACE VALUES. It was more effiencent, easier to understand and we didn't waste "precious class time" drawing up boxes. I agree with wwleslie... there needs to be a balance with what they're teaching us. I've just finished year 11 Maths and I was disturbed at how many of my classmates haven't learnt long division in primary school. It make polynomial equations really hard for them. We "wasted" class time doing primary school work.

In countries that perform well on international math tests (mostly in Asia and Europe), they do not teach junk computation methods (like clustering and lattice for multiplication); their texts are more rigorous than anything we have, though. The problem with traditional American math texts is that they didn't teach students how to think (too much drill); the problem with the new texts (like TERC and Everyday Math) is that they don't teach students how to compute. Why can't we have both?

I feel her pain, but unfortunately SHE IS DEAD WRONG. Math achievement has fallen significantly with respect to the rest of the world, and the countries who are dominating our kids are using methods similar to the TERC/Cluster. We must get on board with better math methods. Yes, it will be difficult at first, but more beneficial in the long run. She failed to demonstrate how much easier the TERC method is to use once you become proficient. Multi-digit multiplication becomes second nature.

Oh My God . . . the "cluster" method is so confusing and seems like an enormous waste fo time. I am shocked and horrified that they are actually teaching that as an introduction to learning multiplication. I can see offering this kind of prob. solution a year AFTER mastery of basic algorythums, perhaps to strengthen logic centers in the brain, but, as a method for basic math . . . NO WAY! What a scam.

i see a mathematical pattern of decay in education in Holland, where I live. Teachers cannot even count 4*3 without a calculator, and there were even suggestions to teach a new way of maths: 3*3 is an estimate of 10 would be correct... I am glad that I have been properly taught mats and I think it is needed, even with the new techniques like calculators and so on. Why use a calculator when you can compute it yourselve?Also the Dutch languages are changed to be easier every 3 to 5 years, why?

Everyday Math is garbage. My two sons, who are very good at math, have come home with moronic homework such as "Find three things in your home that weigh about what you think this [picture of a book] weighs." My older son is now in seventh grade, and he came home one day last year, and said, "Hey Mom! I finally learned the right way to do multiplication! As a future math teacher (the screen name is old...apologies for its classlessness) this really really irks me. I had heard rumors that they were teaching math like this. I cannot emphasize how much I believe calculators have become a crutch for our society! This is SO irksome! At the third presidential debate it was brought up by the moderators that we spend more per capita per student than any other country yet we're doing worse than a LOT of countries Maybe this should say something??

My favorite graduations have always been child-centered. Make them short and sweet. Introduce the child. Talk about Montessori and how it has helped the children and how they have grown up the past several years. Thank the parents, then let the children play on the playground. I would like to point out if you think Montessori does not prepare people for a digital, service-oriented age, be sure to google the names "Larry Page" and "Sergey Brin," both of whom have said how Montessori was beneficial to them. You still have not answered my question. You only use words like "horrible" that aren't very descriptive. Thank you for the book suggestion I will definately look into getting a copy of it. Enrolling other children, hmmmmm, the thought did cross my mind I am going to look into seeing what it takes to become a Montessori trained teacher (I forget what Montessorians call them) and see if it is a possibilitly to start a school. There are a few down here (texas) but none where I am at and none that I know of that goes even through elementary school much less high school.

You should not buy Montessori materials to use at home. The philosophy is much more important than the materials, and those that you could use you could make yourself. Read "Montessori from the Start," a great book for Montessori parents. Definitely don't try to build a classroom in your home unless you are planning on enrolling other children. You'll spend THOUSANDS and your daughter will still be missing out on the more important social aspects of the Montessori philosophy.

For what this advice is worth, consider this: the McCain campaignis basically selling itself like a brand of soap or a movie. It depends on what game your playing. Not all games can have 2 players on 1 Xbox for multiplayer. If you know that you can have split screen multiplayer: Just turn on two controllers and sync them to the Xbox. While on the 360 Dashboard, press the center button on the second controller and have them sign into a guest account. When you go to play the game, there should be two players. This works with most games. Otherwise, you can do this in the game's multiplayer lobby.

Your talking about the Xbox Live Arcade 360 bundle, right? I believe that it comes with Xbox Live, but it doesn't have a hard drive. It only comes with a 256MB Memory Card. That means that you won't be able to do much with Xbox Live since you can't download any of the stuff. I'd recommend just getting the Pro Bundle

As a teacher that is currently using Everyday Math, I ask that ypu please give the program some time. When my school first implemented EM, the first year was a challenge for all of us. It was quite different from any program that we had used before, therefore it took some time for all of us (teachers, students, & parents) to get used to it. Now, 7 years later, we LOVE it!! The kids "get" math more than they ever did before & our math scores prove it! Please be patient...it DOES get better!

The old test likely was based around the prior math curriculum. If I teach one method but give an examination based around a second method, then the person trained with the first method will do poorly on an examination based on the second method. That says nothing at all about the validity of the second method. I'd have to see additional evidence that cannot be attributed to a difference of methods to believe it. It may just be that UW's admission standards fell, too. Too many factors at hand.

A report has just come out called 'The Final Report of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel', which was commissioned by the President to look at Math Ed in the US. The report said that it looked at 11 studies that said there was "limited or no impact" of calculators on improving conceptual development or problem solving abilities. It also said 10 of the 11 reports were over 20 years old. That means only 1 report has come out since 1987! We need more reseacrch before we know for sure!

Reform Math focuses on understanding, traditional math is more about memorizing procedures. Int'l evaluations and college assessment tests are based on the traditional method: Focus on knowledge of procedures and formulas, not understanding, so no wonder scores are gonna decline. If I teach Joe how to dig a hole and teach Bill why we should dig a hole, then ask both to dig a hole, surely Joe will get a higher score. But that says nothing about who's better off and more useful to society today.

I am now in college and I am very proud to say that I began my education at a Montessori school. I studied there until primary school. A year after, I transferred to a public school and noticed the big difference in the teaching style and the cognitive level of the students. I just started a job as a teacher assistant at a Montessori school...and it's freaking awesome. These kids are so self-sufficient, and much calmer than kids at private school. In the toddler classroom, they have these little kids setting the table and serving eachother food...its' the cutest thing ever. :)

But in 7-8 grade, we have more of a high school way of things, with having a schedule of each class we have to go to, but it all happens in the same room. This is so awesome!!! I remember all the materials in this video! I went to Montessori from primary through 5th year and absolutely loved it. Utopia. Here's something interesting that the video didn't mention. The kids call their teacher by his/her first name to promote mutual respect. We already knew the teacher was there to teach so there's no need to remind about their status. I thought it was the weirdest thing when I went to another school and the kids called their teachers by Mr./Ms. ***.

Educating for Peace goes through high school. There are still only a handful of schools that go through high school but they are growing. I have visited and shot at Clark Montessori in Cincinnati where students can attend public Montessori from early childhood through high school. It was recently given a "Bronze" award by the US News and World Report. Also children have the choice how long they want to do an activity. They move on at their own pace.

I REMEMBER SO MUCH OF THIS!!! I went to Montessori for 7-8 years [I'm 16 now] and its seriously the best school system I've ever seen or experienced. Learning through discovery is a huge help for retention and actual understanding of concepts. AND it's fun!
