well...it's election time tomorrow let me know who you vote for also congrats to Barack Obama and i think both him and John McCain ran an outstanding campaign, i don't like Labour's campaign about not trusting John Key but i think any negative advertising is bad advertising, i'm undecided like a lot of people i think?

The elections over, and New Zealand was pretty clear in their vote, the result was not unexpected - after 9 years in government, it's pretty hard for any party to keep their seat, thanks to everyone that commented, was great to hear from you!

he ignored the media and public when they asked questions that's why, i guess....don'no might be wrong but the media is the one that make you fames and also can bring you down too.
By: nzdesignagirl. on 09 Nov 08, 09:11:00
i deffo think winston has been slaughtered by the media and even though he's not had any of it proven its done the damage, he was an icon in politics and its a bit sad to see him go, he would have had 7 (?) seats if he'd won his electorate which really would have stirred it up a bit! I also hope our State Owned assets remain that way!
By: nzdesignagirl. on 09 Nov 08, 08:15:47
thanks for commenting zocam24 i do agree with what your saying - its a catch 22 for a lot of people and working more can be pointless when their benefits or allowances get cut, i admit i never worked more as a student because of that, so i think those issues need to be addressed. As a leader though i still think Helen was a fantastic PM and i'm sad she's resigned from the labour party, but respect that she's so decisive. As a business owner also i'm interested to see how national will help me!
By: nzdesignagirl. on 09 Nov 08, 08:09:25
I"m a business owner also, and initially national was a bit appealing in that respect, i thought it was funny john and helen fighting over who wanted the anti-smacking law (they both trying to take credit - which campbell thought was funny also as it was so unpopular!) and agreed the dirt slinging didn't go down well in campaigning, although i thought helen did less of it in the debates than john did.
By: nzdesignagirl. on 09 Nov 08, 08:07:12
well i'm bit disappointed but definitely not surprised, i don't think helen didn't anything wrong and i don't think john key didn't anything amazing, just after 9 years whoever's in is gonna struggle to make it in again. Glad however the greens have grown, in polls jeanette fitzimmons is actually the most trusted politician, and i like that she remains true to the cause, she's not trying to change now to be in on national, she drew a line and has stuck to it, so yeah thats my view! and you?
By: garynz345. on 09 Nov 08, 03:43:06
i voted, for my local Labour MP and party vote went NZ First. I like Winston in parliament, because the other MP's dont know what or who he is going to stir up next, so tends to help keep them on their toes and honest. shame Labour didnt get in again, I think they are the "lesser of the 2 evils" they also tend to look after the guy on the ground. some of John Keys policies need to be questioned, and i hope he doesn't sell off any of our State Owned assets. (I think Australia is looking good!!)
By: Mintbeans123. on 09 Nov 08, 02:44:59
hey are u happy wht the outcome??
By: 5hameless. on 08 Nov 08, 21:44:07
Hey Mon I voted for Greens yesterday. It's a shame that Labour didn't manage to hold another term, because there's far too much about National's policies and plans that I don't agree on. I just hope that people who wanted "change" realise it's not necessarily for the better. In America's case, however, it will be the changing factor they need to repair their country and their reputation in the world. I just hope that what state owned assets we've gotten back don't get sold again.
By: zocam24. on 08 Nov 08, 12:49:53
Anyway.... the result is in now, so regardless of opinion it's time we all get together and try and fix some of the problems. To steal a phrase from the newly elected US Prez Obama, (And I think Bob the Builder previous to that), "Yes We Can!".
By: zocam24. on 08 Nov 08, 12:48:00
Also, being a business owner I like that the Nats want to build NZ based on WEALTH not WELFARE. I've never been pro National before - but it was between them and the greens (and they lost my vote when they discounted working at all with Nats). Interesting how people talk about trust issues with JK, and yet Helen was the one pushing through laws late at night - Electoral Finance Act, the unpopular anti-smacking bill just to name 2 - and digging up dirt and slinging mud throughout the campaign.
By: zocam24. on 08 Nov 08, 12:41:07
This looks like it's going to be an unpopular opinion on here, but I voted Nats. Reasons being I'm fed up with seeing people who don't work hard being rewarded, while many people who work their butts off are not rewarded (as a single person with no children, Labour policies for us are close to non-existent). I have friends who are students or parents on the dole, and it's in their best interests not to work extra (or their handout gets docked). That doesn't make sense to me!
By: zocam24. on 08 Nov 08, 12:31:56
I'm not disagreeing with your MMP thought, but you have to remember the Nats aren't the only party who are being a tad anti-democratic. Electoral Finance Act anyone?
By: evilparkin. on 08 Nov 08, 11:47:50
I'm surprised that you said that there wasn't much mud-slinging in the US presidential campaign. It got far dirtier than anything here in NZ during those last few weeks before the US election. I'm glad Obama won too. While I agree that both McCain and Obama were good candidates (though I disagreed with more of what McCain said than what Obama said), I think McCain's choice of Palin as running mate was foolish. Then again, I guess it probably wasn't so much his choice as his party's choice.
By: evilparkin. on 08 Nov 08, 11:41:14
It's more like the Labour party are the (social) democrats and the National party are the (conservative) republicans. (It's a bit confusing because Labour's colours are red and National's are blue, the reverse of the US.) Though really, you can't really make a true comparison, because the US Democratic and Republican parties are far more left/right than NZ Labour and National. Both Labour and National are fairly central, so things don't change too much regardless of which gets into power.
By: evilparkin. on 08 Nov 08, 11:36:03
Google "political compass", go to their site, then click on the NZ election 2008 link. It's kind of interesting - Labour isn't as left wing as you'd think. ;)
By: madutdman. on 08 Nov 08, 11:32:53
Let's just hope he knows what he's doing. More jobs and less tax :) and and and.....work friday only :)
By: nzdesignagirl. on 08 Nov 08, 11:28:45
yeah go the greens, disappointed they're not going to be in but at least they are growing as a party, overall a good election for them!
By: nzdesignagirl. on 08 Nov 08, 11:27:12
ha dan, well i can't say i'm too knowledgeable about oz politics so we're even there!!
By: nzdesignagirl. on 08 Nov 08, 11:26:41
well i agree with you, lets hope our state owned assets remain our own now, interesting to see how labour will transform with new members and new leadership, helen clark's speech was really gracious though, i think she's done an amazing job the last 9 years!
By: nzdesignagirl. on 08 Nov 08, 11:23:03
yeah they won - lets see if they hold up on their promises!
By: StuEvo. on 08 Nov 08, 11:10:36
Unfortunately it doesn't matter who wins in any government election. The elite above the governemnt never change, are never seen, and control all their 'puppets' which we vote for thinking we have choice.
