You are right about the heroin but the video is showing this guy at the beginning, who overdosed; and how in life he got to that point. Him as a boy running through the fields playing with mice/rats to coming home from the war and taking up heroin and becoming nothing.

This song is about heroin because if you watch the video it shows the guy rocking back and forth a sign of heroin addiction and it also shows the doctors checking his eyes to see if he overdosed. Also they shoot him with adrenalin to bring him to thus why he screams. Also "you may feel a little sick" you get sick on heroin, and "this is not who I am" Your not yourself at all on heroin. And you can hardly stand if your on really good or a lot of heroin.

"Wish you were here" indeed is a great album but most of the Floyds albums could be "their best" to many fans ... I have em all and went throught them billions of times ... I have 2 favorites : Animals and The Final Cut ... And the movie "Live at Pompei" is one of the best thing ever done in recent music history ...

By the way, the song is NOT about heroin. Waters was inspired after being injected with tranquillizers for hepatitis just before a show. The music was written by David Gilmour (originally for a solo album, but he didn't use it), which is why, I think, it is the best song on an otherwise over rated album. Floyd's fan are bigger stoners than they were. These guys were musicians, not junkies.

They also had shit in 1979 (the year "The Wall" came out). That was the year YMCA by the Village People came out. "Ummagumma" was the first Floyd album I bought. After that I went out and got "Piper at the Gates of Dawn," "A Saucerful of Secrets," "Atom Heart Mother," "Meddle" (Echoes is great), and "Obscured by the Clouds." For me, "Wish You Were Here" was the best thing they ever did, but "The Wall" was a disappointment. With a few exceptions it is mostly Roger Waters self indulgence.

Look, pal The Wall was an album made to sell and very disappointing for a Pink Floyd album, but that song in addition with 'Hey You' are excellent. I agree that Pink Floyd stopped after that... but their offer to music is uncountable...

of course...everybody can give an interpretation of it...basing on himself experenceses...for example a man who had,or have heroin addiction interpret it in that way, someone who lost is father in an other way and someone who had the fever when he was child in an other way... i think that Waters dedicated it to his fathers, has it's written in the biography... but as you said, we can never know...:) sorry for my english... peace and love
