Thanks for your reply, gryphussquadron. So I see you´ve informed yourself in between and I didn´t needed to encourage you to do that. You did more than others who wrote so many naive things about this movie and war as such here in this thread. I´m recommending for everybody the WWI aviation movie "Aces High". This is one mature and harsh movie about war and airwar in WWI. Aces High isn´t jolly good entertainment for a happy evening but shows real people. Not like the terrible Flyboys.

Sorry about the comment. It was written almost a year ago and now I see what you're saying. Believe me, I know about the harsh realities now. Awful stuff. My great grandfather talked to my grandfather and I went to talk to him about an assignment which some how lead to WWI (I don't really know how...). Trench warfare for example, live, eat and sleep in your own feces. In the air, the life expectancy was extremely short for a pilot and they would do anything for that last kill knowing it was....

BOTH sides of WWI DID shoot soldiers, civillians and downed pilots on the ground. WWI wasn´t about romanic knightly rules. It was especially at the end simply about killing the enemy. Shooting the enemy pilots on the ground was common. The pilots who did that didn´t wanted to die the next day from the bullets of a pilot they´ve spared one day earlier on the ground. I´m suggesting that you inform yourself a little about the harsh realities of WWI on the ground and in the air.

Look, it may have some inaccuracies, the german pilots having aim like stormtroopers, the zeppelin escort, the infinite ammo, but it was a great movie. How are these people going to entertain the masses with planes that have less than 15 seconds of ammunition? It was a fantastic film, and people are overthinking it. Seriously, doesn't it remind you of Biggles and those Commando Comics? Cheer up, people!

...while in the air...made one believing in the existance of paralele universes. That includes the ridiculous way the headshot was shown at the end. And I didn´t even mentioned the rescue-between-the-treches nonsense or the "rescue-of-my-loved-ones-under-the-eyes-of-the-Germans" trash. This movie ignored the developement of war movie making and realistic story telling in war movies of the last 50 years. In reality there were only a few red Dr.1´s in the air in WW1. And none of them were EXACTLY painted like the Red Baron´s one....like it is shown in this "accurate" movie here. A hand is "trapped" below a wing of a fighter and has to be amputated. At least in the "reality" of Flyboys. In the real reality you are able to lift those wooden/fabrik WWI planes WITH ONE HAND. The stable flying side by side of the planes of Flyboys and the ability of the pilots to shout words towards earch other...

BTW: The Fokker Dr.1 was even in it´s best times a rare plane. In one scene of Flyboys are appearing more Dr.1´s as the Germans had alltoghether in reality. The Dr.1 wasn´t even the most deadly fighter the Germans had. But because every child knows the triple winged Dr.1 of Manfred von Richthoven....the Germans have only the Dr.1 in the movie. Painted ALL in the colours of Manfred von Richthovens plane.

The Fokker triple winged fighter wasn´t even in the air at that time this movie is set. It´s as if you are making a movie about the Battle of Britain and there are appearing suddenliy Me262 jet fighters in 1940 over the British islands. And the worst and ridiculous stuff: ALL are painted in the red. Exactly in the colours of the Red Baron. Yawn! And on top of this: The only real villain is painted in black and is smiling mean all the time. OMG, that´s so kindergarten like nothing else.

Flyboys is one of the most inaccurate WWI aviation movies and one of the most cliched and inaccurate war movies in general. Where to begin and where to end with the countless worn out cliches and massive inaccuracies? A man is running several meters over the back of a Zeppelin without beeing whiped away by the winds in that heights after one step out of his gunner position. A Zeppelin is guarded by dozens of single motored fighters towards his distant target. Yawn. In WWI!

McLaren Mercedes, you are also right, but by 1917 chivalry was gone. In 1915 or 1916, there were many instances of chivalry (not by Mannock or Ball of course) like Udet seeing that his opponent had jammed guns and waving him off! JUST LIKE IN THE FILM (well almost!) I find the film, besides the glaring inaccuracies of all Dr I red painted units, fairly well done. The scenes, albeit CGI, are amazing.

Many young people are thinking that much of this movie is correct. All those clichees about war, Germans and their own country are planted into their heads. Especially into the heads of those, who only want to be entertained and aren´t history interested....but are "knowing" now something about WWI, Germans or the USA or history after leaving the cinema. This movie is ignoring every developement in warmovie-making of the last 40 years. The result is annoying, dangerous and massive inaccurate.

This movie had two links with reality: There was a war called WWI and there was an Escadrille Lafayette. That´s too less. Flyboys wasn´t only massive historically and technically incorrect. Aces High 1976, now we are talking about a real WWI aviator movie! Fly Boys is overall a joke, especially the scene with the zeppeliner escorted by multiple red painted Fokker dr.1s is lame. Nice aerial views though and a dramatic encounter with a Gotha bomber, never seen before in such a movie.

Flyboys was on the same low level like Pearl Haror and U-571. Dozens of RED Fokker Dr1´s were guarding a Zeppelin to it´s target. The ridiculous amputation scene between the trenches. The mean smiling villain in the only BLACK painted Fokker. The pre-teenage lovestory that left me as cold as an himalayan Jak. The absolute clichee overkill. Flyboys was a scientific test about how many clichees and historical inaccuarcys one can cramp into one single movie. A bad movie....and a bad bad warmovie.

I´ve read somewhere, that somewhere in the USA teachers showed THIS movie in history classes. That´s a crime. That isn´t to excuse. No way. Some planes of the late squad of Manfred von Richthoven were painted red. But they weren´t painted exactly the same AND they didn´t flew ALL the Fokker Dr.1...like shown in this movie. The Fokker Dr.1 wasn´t even the deadliest fighter of the Germans and Manfred von Richthoven scored his most kills in other planes. But because every child knows the red Dr.1 of the late Red Baron..EVERY German in this crappy movie is flying a Dr.1 in the very same paint-scheme like the Red Baron had.

One of the worst movies about aviators of WWI. Fokker Dr.1´s years before their real appearance over the Western Front. The Dr.1 was a rare plane. Even at it´s best times there were not as many Dr.1´s over the whole Western Front as one single scene of Flyboys is showing. ALL Germans are pained EXACTLY like the plane of Manfred von Richthoven. The only real villain in this movie is painted BLACK and is smiling all the time mean. YAWN! A movie-chlichee-overkill. Watch "Aces High" instead.

Maybe I'm misinformed, but why do German triplanes are mostly preferred in dogfights than biplanes? Maybe because of their agility? however your 100% right about the Red Baron!. He in fact was the only one who painted his plane "All Red" He did this to intimidate his opponent and because he was so dam good he flaunted it and wanted to be seen so pilots knew who they were about to get killed by. I think the director kind of used the Black Falcon plane in a way to portray the Red Baron. It was almost the same kind of persona with this guy being the one (Falcon) a lot of pilots were after.

Oh yes there were Black pilots in WWII! have you forgotten about Tuskegee??? they ended up being the best fighter pilot group of the European air war ever... because on Bomber escort missions alone they never lost one bomber to enemy fighters and as far as enemy kills, their squadron of P-51's had the highest kill ratio of any fighter squadron. they were simply the best man.

This film is not nearly as "historical", as it tries to be, first of all (and I don't want to sound racist but) their were no black soldiers, in WWI, nor were they in WWII, much less pilots, Wilson was very well known for his intolerance against the black community. Then the director doesn't have the slightest idea of what really was Richtofen, he was the ONLY pilot that painted his plane red, cause if you did painted in one color, you were easily spotted, basically dead! There wasn't actually a black pilot in the Lafayette Escadrille. There was only ONE black pilot who ever flew in World War I: Eugene Bullard. He shot down two planes for the French Air Service before he was sent to the trenches. They removed him from flying detail because he had punched a French sergeant.

in ww1, only officers had become pilots. and there haven´t been black skinned officers neither in european armys nor in us-army. also not in the Foreign Legion! this person would be a fictional one, also in serious films... ...and there was only ONE red triplane. the plane of the RED baron, manfred freiherr (baron) von richthofen. (because of this red colour, he got his name!)

just a movie,may be marketing has decided all the tripes had to be red despite of historicall inacuracy.Nice pics for chlidren to involve withvintage fighters in this Cyber-era.Not really for speciallists! want a good one WWI movie "aces high" (1974) there´s the real drama depicted, war between good guys is the worst war, and pilots are generally good people, that´s why I feelparticullar hate for air war, and love fighters beauty.
