There is only one solution to poverty in Africa and poverty anywhere else in the world and it's simple. It's called freedom and individual liberty. The governments over in Africa need to remove the endless regualtions and rules that keep entrepreneurs from starting and expanding business. I am not feeling so much nervous as I am rushed: my camera fills 1 gb in about 9 minutes, and although I have thought through what I want to say, I have gotten clipped at the end several times before. Luckily, I have just learned that, as a YouTube partner, I can go over 10 minutes, and so I am trying to learn how to work with a camcorder to make non-rushed videos that will hopefully also have better audio.

Very interesting review. I note that you don't discuss this as applies to language instruction techniques as used in classrooms, though certainly the same (or nearly same) typology applies. I've had a couple of these used on me, to better or worse effect; so far none have tried the more explicit meta style, alas. (I've learned several languages by now plus some linguistics, and learn much better when this is explicitly done; I get irritated at the rote sort.)

I'm sorry but I cannot give you a straight answer. From the pedagogical side, language learning methods/models are very much a question of trends. One style will be very much in vogue in a certain place and time, and as an integral part of advocating it, its backers tend to sharply criticize all previous and all other models. What inevitably happens is that method/model will be pushed forward as the solution to better classroom teaching, only to be discarded in its turn a few years later.

I think that the authors of most methods work within the dominant pedagogical conceptions about language learning current at their time, and that they simply hope and imagine they are developing the best manual for all learners. Right now, sadly and frustratingly, it seems that that dominant dictate is that they must dumb-down the content in order to attempt to make it more accessible.
