I have tremendous respect, admiration & affection for these guys & this gal, & to see them in action in their prime is indeed a rare pleasure...thanx so much! Looks like "Playboy After Dark;" think I see Hef to the right of the trio. Their influence is incalculable--nobody's ever done it w/ more creativity. I used to think Lambert was the lesser partner, but come to find out he was the vocal arranger & he certainly holds his own here, & what can u say about J.H. except: master of the form!

I too was surprised to see these guys in here....I got turned on to these cats when I was 16(1966) And they still are my all time favourites. In 1990 I met Jon at a festival,he was working in a quartet with his daughter...it was okay,but not great.....Of course Jon was stellar....About eight years ago Jon and Annie came around with a hot band,and they SMOKED...It was a small club and I ended up hanging with them after the show....They were two of the nicest people ever.

Thank you for posting this vid. It's a big nostalgia flash for me becauseI saw them live at Basin Street East in NYC when I was there for two weeks, my 18th birthday present from my parents. I was in the audience when they were recording the Live At Basin St. East album. Yolande invited me and my two Louisville friends over to her apartment on St. Marks Place for ice cream one afternoon. This was jazz, sophisticated, intelligent, soulful. Lambert,Hendricks,&Bavan made music for those uptown and the high society. You have to look high and low to find music like this today. Very few aspire to master this genre. Sadly, this is an art that could use a heart transplant. This was the real lounge music to chill with.

I'd like to see anyone follow Annie Ross and hold their ground... I think she did a great job considering... epecially considering today that there aren't so many vocalists who specialize in REAL vocalese (meaning doing original material, studying the original solos and writing their own lyrics.)

It is alleged that 'Bavan' took over from Annie Ross because too much of the group's expense account was being squandered by her on 'nose candy'. Jon Hendricks divulged this is an interview last time he performed in the UK. Annie Ross was also a superb actor - starring in a TV drama series with John Cuthbertson & Ricky Fulton ("I'm Back!") - and I even have a cookery book written by her!

True. Especially his music, you have to encode it all, and from a musician's perspective, I have to say you know you have encoded the music, when you can listen to each instrument. Each pick at the strings, each hid on the skins, and each pick at the strings by the bass. It is awsome when you can LISTEN to his music, not hear it. Also alot of people have to move onto his other stuff than the comercial music. Even he was tired of it, but sure its great music but alot of his other stuff is better!

First of all, I LOVE the Drifters, but this is an embarrassment. The whole group is so off key...and the lead is horrible! I've heard Bobby Hendricks on other songs, and he has a wonderful light tenor like Clyde McPhatter. Why is he singing in a key too low and trying to be Ben E King? Wow...this is the worse thing I've ever heard by any of the groups calling themselves the Drifters!

Okay...that much I am with you on. Back then, Americans could make decent cars and yeah...you're not going to see the Defiant Ones, To Kill A Mockingbird, etc. It's a combination of oversaturation of media (too much, too often) and quite honestly, the decreasing lack of intelligence in the viewing audience. I don't disagree with what your saying. It is still the "Golden Era". Being an old car nut, the golden era had nice cars and people had common sense when it came to the way they dressed. Of course many things have improved since then but many things haven't. Look at movies today, I can hardly find a good comedy. Many of them are full of dumb potty jokes. Can anyone match up to Laurel and Hardy, or the Marx Brothers, or the three stooges today? I highly doubt it. If there are then only a few.

Mad Men...the 50's and very early 60's get referred to as some bygone, "Golden Era" where American values reigned when in reality, repression of women and blacks was the name of the game. Interesting our Don managed to restrain himself. Not only is it her subordinate position...Dick Whitman not about to hand his great Gatsbysque Don over to a mere office manager, I'd say he sensed Joan would have his number as a dodger/liar within 30 seconds. Rachel, Betty, and Midge through equally lovely in their ways were just a bit more innocent and inexperienced at the start as well as wealthier, socially positioned.
