Say that I was coming up to a rotary/roundabout and I was doing 60 and in 5th gear.. I slow down to around 20mph doing nothing more than braking and putting the clutch in, then find there is nothing coming around the roundabout so i can move off again, so i then put the car into 2nd, lift up on the clutch and drive off.... is this a proper way to do it? I am quite used to doing it like this now but dont want to be putting extra strain on something. Thanks, I await a reply :)

very good example.. i do this routinely in my car.. even just drivnig at normal speeds on the road it makes for smoother changes and less wear on the clutch. quite tricky to begin with but comes naturally after a while. its amazing how many people you see driving on a track that cant/dont do this.
