gosh he's so in control in the section with the chromatic accaciaturas in thirds. arrau kinda loses control...

bolet was good, but i've not heard his t.e.s.

Berman seems to play all these transcendaental etudes with such ease, and a lot of understanding, as well. I believe the complete recording to be still unsurpassed, 50 years later... It's not labored the way the arrau recording is, and it breathes, yet is viscerally very exciting. That extremely difficult final variation is lightening fast!

Mazeppa isn't the most difficult. The most difficult is Feux Follets, then next is supposed to be Chasse Neige.

the best

Hey boys are you not forgetting the titanic interpretation from Jorge Bolet, probably the best playing Liszt.

i've said a couple of times already that berman defines the t.e.s for me. nowhere moreso than here. the 'slow' melody that starts about 2:20 literally ripped me out of jaded stonerhood back into the world of real music...to be able to create/recreate such truth and beauty...that's why someone might consecrate a life. would have loved the opportunity to simply say thanks to berman. what solzhenitsyn did for literature, berman did for soviet music.

I don't believe Horowitz, Rubinstein or Richter ever recorded Mazeppa (the most difficult of the Transcendental Etudes). I know I would have loved to hear a Richter performance of this. Even though I think Arrau's Mazeppa is better, I still think Berman is up there with the best pianists to play Liszt.

smithsherman-What of Gilels,Michelangeli,Bolet,Gould,Kempff,Cziffra,-aside from Horowitz,Rubinstein,Arrau, and Richter listed below. Were they all chicken liver? A very silly statement not at all worthy of you.

This is the very best of the 20th century? Have you forgotten about Horowitz, Arrau, Rubinstein and Richter?
By: slothvader. on 03 Jun 08, 03:24:42
lazar berman's mazeppa returned me to classical music...30 years ago this year. the 'slow' passage a couple of minutes in floored me, once i really listened. think i stayed stoned and played it on an lp over and over for about two whole days, hardly eating. whatever happened to berman? imho he's a better pianist, at least of liszt, than many other post-soviet exports.

Very good! In the way that i think that have to be played, with emotion, not excessive speed!
