Not quite correct. It's a digital camera and it's a DSLR, but not all digital cameras are DSLRs. That term refers to those cameras that actually have a mirror in them that lets you see exactly what is captured by the sensor.

The D40x and D60 are both slightly downgraded versions of the D40. Don't let the numbers fool you.

Is it a DSLR?
By: iunnox666. on 22 Nov 08, 04:09:22
Not to mention the D40 has better low light performance, and has 1\500 flash sync vs 1\200.

i wouldnt save extra for the d60. your paying extra for the the d40x and the d60 for upgrades you won't even need or notice at this point. you don't need the extra megapixels unless you will be zooming and cropping a lot of your photos, or making prints that are 3-4 ft big. the d40 is an excellent enough camera to begin with especially with the price. i started with a d40 and absolutely loved it. i upgraded to the d80 recently. After your comfortable with the d40, then upgrade to a d80 or d90.

You don't need an expensive camera to start with. This one is really easy to use, so i'd suggest you go with this one. The camera isn't what makes a photo. It's the person pushing the button.

Im about to buy one, but I have a choice between this one and the D60, only thing is the D60 is like a grand more expensive (south african currency). Should I rather save and wait a little and get the D60?

I love my D40. I use a Tamron 18-270 lens. A DSLR makes it look like you know what you're doing. At the dragstrip, I can get anyone to open up the hood, they think I'm a track photographer or something.

the great thing about SLR's is that there are twiddly things to turn to make it look like you know what you're doing!! :) me wanna get one...
By: kkoge. on 05 Nov 08, 17:48:52
althou it's totally doing no justice for the lens, i tried a 70-300mm VR Zoom lens on the D40 and it worked in magic. tried birding.. and it does show some feather detailing still despite 6.1 megapixels. gets very noisy above iso400. but what to do. manual wise u get only iso200.
