I cannot disagree with anything you just said. Also, people need to stop feeling "entitled". Just because you get a PhD in English literature does not mean you will get a tenure position at Yale. However, the lack of prospects for some of these grad students is truly frightneing. A higher degree should help one ESCAPE a future of bagging groceries for welfare mothers! That is the whole damned point: freedom from the lifestyle of the working poor (like I am currently living)...

I agree; he completed a degree program, but your point seems to be that every person who completes a degree program is entitled to a tenure track faculty position. These positions just don't exist in many disciplines. Schools know it, but they often don't tell their students. Students often know it, but they don't think they will be the one left 'bagging groceries'. There is no reason a doctoral student is these field should not understand how difficult it is to get a tenure track job.

He went to school for years, and paid his dues. I work a crappy retail job, and even I agree with him. One day, i will go to grad school for my PhD in Psychology, but that will be several years from now. Great video, very interesting...and angering at the same time.

what job do you want? do you know how many applicants apply for each tenure-track position? do you know how the median time to a tenure track position? a PhD is no guarantee of a decent job. schools have to be more forthcoming with these information, but you have a responsibility to be informed as well. if you are not comfortable with the job prospects, get out now!

i strongly support better treatment of adjunct faculty and graduate students, but the elitism in this video is ridiculous. the interviewee seems to be too good for a 'normal' job and is entitled to a 'middle-class' academic lifestyle. there is nothing wrong with wanting an academic job, but the way in which his desires seemed to be wrapped in his perception of his social status (not wanting to be seen with the common folk bagging groceries) is elitist.

I was an adjunct for seventeen years, while of course working any other full-time jobs I could get. One problem with trying to making life better for the adjuncts is that at least half the graduate departments in the humanities need to close immediately - maybe two-thirds. The supply of willing grad students needs to correlate much more closely with available tenure-track openings. Then there would be little opportunity for people to spend ten years on this kind of "track."

Thanks for these videos! I have some wood stamps on their way to me and I'm trying to figure out the best storage after I unmount them. I was considering stamping them with Stayz On ink onto a transparency. Then, sticking them to the transparency and putting it into a page protector to keep them from falling out of my binder. I adapted it from what is done with clear stamps, but wasn't sure if it'd work for the rubber ones with the foam. Do you think this method would work? Thanks! :)

This is a well made well presented video. One word of caution CD cases and similar storage methods are highly acidic. Over a number of years this could cause your stamps to deteriorate. Depends how long you keep your stamps and how long you store them in this way. Just an archival issue really.

He covered his ear so that he could hear what he was doing and block out the rest of the noise when he sang a low note. Its hard to sing loud when you're singing that low. A lot of bass singers and even baritone singers have to do that. They weren't using in ear monitors back then. I know I do that sometimes in the recording studio so I can hear what I'm doing when I'm laying down a track

You will see a lot of bass singers do that. Its really so they can make sure they are on pitch. When they hit those realy low notes, it takes a lot of air and isn't that loud, so they are directing the sound up to their ear. You can also push your ear closed and listen for the vibration.

I'd venture to say he was 73. I know he looked the same in the Atlanta Homecoming videos produced by the Gaithers, and that was shortly before he died. He died in November 1998, just a few days short of his 74th birthday.

as far as i know, JD was the record holder for a really long time with a C0, and the only person i know of that broke that record is tim storms (there's an amazing vid of him on youtube). tim broke it by a little more than an octave (B -2), without the aid of technology, but i still wholeheartedly agree that JD is the best. i think theres a point where it doesnt really matter how low you can go anymore, anyways. JD almost never came close to using the bottom to wow people. he's the king.

JD will always be the lowest in my book. You have guys coming out now that may be recorded lower, but remember the sound technology when JD was recording was not as great as it is today and JD didn't have any real competitors in his day. If JD were alive and young, I wouldn't bet against him thats for sure. He was and is the true King of Bass Singers.

At the end, JD hit a solid F#1(American Standard of Pitch Measurement)or an F#0 (European Standard of Pitch Measurement). The man was phenomenal and he was never scared to try his ending notes an octave lower. I wish that I could've met him.

Its sad that so man people did not get the opportunity to hear J. D. sing in person. He was a great invidudial and had a great voice. I grew up in the 60's near Memphis and miss J. D. and the Blackwood Brothers. I was just able to hold down the folding seats in Ellis Auditorum in Memphis the first time I heard the Blackwood Brothers and the Statemen with Hovie Lister. Time has made a change in everything.

That is Ed Hill. He sang with the Stamps probably, in the mid 70's, he also travelled with the Singing Americans in the mid 80's, The Statesmen in the late 70's & Early 80's prior to joining the Singing Americans. Now he is reforming the Prophets Quartet along with Mike Allen, (Former Stamps tenor) Bill Baize, & Paul Jackson. Incidentally, the first PQ was formed in the late 50's/60's. Hope this helps.

He seems to like the rhythm of the song. It is repetitive. The images are black and white with only some color, so I think that works for him. Also, he is recently into counting. He holds my fingers and touches the tips of them and carresses them as we count. He has a lot a sensory integration issues going on.
