Ah, Eric Moussambani, aka Eric the Eel. I remember seeing this on television when it happened. Warmed my heart to not only see this fellow from Equatorial Guinea (who trained in the only pool in his entire country, which was 20m) actually swim his heart out, but also to see my countrymen and women cheer him on wildly for his gallant efforts. Actually, you tool, this really did happen. It was an officiasl trial. The man is now widely known as Eric the Eel, and is well regarded in Australia where this happened during the 2000 Olympics. The commentators weren't official ones, but a pair of popular comedians (pseudonyms H.G. Nelson and 'Rampaging' Roy Slaven) doing their own version.

well, think about it. You're watching gymnastics or figure skating. They smile the entire time during their routines, but afterwards you can see how tired they are. Same principle applies to synchro. It doesn't look good it we're huffing and puffing and dying all over the place and the judges certainly aren't going to be pleased. So we make it look like it's the easiest thing we've done. In actuality, what's going through our heads is the routine and "I'm about to die"

I still am constantly amazed every time I see synchronized swimming. I do speed swimming, and it is probably much easier than this. And you have to remember every move, and not lose concentration for a second. Kudos to all the talented people who practice one of the hardest sports around.

And may I just add (I know, I'm saying A LOT here...) that I'm not putting down other sports. I don't do that, because I hate it when mine is critisied. Synchro is a very difficult and physically demanding sport. But SO ARE OTHER SPORTS. I can't play football. And I'm not fast at speed swimming. I would suck at gymnastics. But those sports are difficult in OTHER WAYS. Each sport has different ways it takes its toll on you. I can't run like a runner, and runners can't swim like a swimmer.

okay, wow. No. You're a wimp. In synchro we take beatings too. My teammate got a black eye during practice, we're kicking each other constantly underwater, and after lifts I'm often kicked in the face in the rush to get to the next part of the routine. After a different lift my teammate fell on anothers head. But we still swim 5 days a week, 7-8 TIMES a week for at least 2 and a half hours. So don't even say we don't get hurt. It deserves a much better reputation.

okay, so obviously I'm a synchro swimmer, and let me say this: I've been swimming for 7 years now and I HATE it when people say my sport isn't hard and that I must not work very hard. This is hard. And it does have that crowd pleasing anticipation! It's just the fact that it is a video. Honestly, videos usually don't do our sport justice, it's a kind of thing you have to see live. But don't judge our sport because it LOOKS easy. We're supposed to do that, making it look effortless is key.

define sport for us then. not your definition, the real definition. something that requires physical skill. As synchro swimmers we run, we train our flexibility,we do "real" swimming, cardio, and we train in the gym. and im not talking about once in a while... everyday! so you may not be able to appreciate the aesthetic values of our sport, but we are very physically in shape... and many of us are in training 24 hours a week or more. and alot of times less then half of it is really synchro.

Swim instructors (like myself) and coaches encourage breathing on both sides because if you breath on one side continuously it will cause uneven muscle development in your shoulder area (assuming you swim like crazy) and it will also put unneeded strain on one side. However, breathing is the hardest part of the stroke to master. Most people tend to breath on the side that feels best to them which will not hurt your stroke if you are a recreational swimmer.
