This band was about stretching the form. Also, Hancock, Shorter and Williams, were aware of Ornette Coleman, Sam Rivers, and Cecil Taylor and consciously brought in those avant garde ideas, with Miles' encouragement, into the band. This is what lead to the "Bitches Brew" era.

Check out Ron Carter's work with Eric Dolphy. Especially the records called "Out There" and "Out to Lunch" Dolphy is now underrated. He went toe to toe with Coltrane on the "Live at the Village Vanguard" record. Also, Tony Williams' playing on "Out to Lunch" is amazing. Enjoy!

I'm sorry you took such offense. I was just LETTING THE FACTS OUT. Actually when you transcribe any of Anthony's solos you will see there might be about one or two that keep the form. Not to say that they are without structure, they just do not maintain the structure of the tune that is know as it's form! check out lifetime maybe not the rock group of Tony's, his other life time shyt it's real sick! peace & Love

Just cause he makes you lose the form doesn't mean he loses the form.

Actually he was about to turn 22. But still impressive.

And to think Tony Williams was all of 18, I think; Sounds like he has three hands and a double bass drum. What a GENIUS! I miss the hell out of Tony. This is superb. 5 stars!

Pretty amazing. All amazing individual musicians. I think Wayne is my favorite musician ever. I posted a video response, even though it has little to do with this.

I find a little humor when I see these old videos where the band is playing an incredible performance, full of technique and speed, while the audiance is sitting still, almost lifeless like they are watching a golf game or something. Irony is the closest word that I can think of, which describes it. Amazing video. ...CLICK... Yeah, it's going in my favorites.
