I had to draw a ... By: kangaroocomedy. on 27 Sep 08, 14:50:40 I had to draw a line at Generation X who sold out after a v promising start. Theres still a lot of confusion with classifications. Bands like The Lurkers and the Buzzcocks had a lot of integrity, but loads others jumped on the band wagon. Take your pick, theres a list as long as you arm who enjoyed brief commercial success, eg The Jags, etc. But where you classify a band like the excellent Eddie and the Hot Rods?
Is there a website listing all 70s UK punk/new wave bands?

This song can only ... By: diamonddog13. on 11 Nov 08, 00:51:15 This song can only have been this perfect with David Sancious, especially the way he glided seemlessly between classical and jazz style at the beginning. Roy Bittan was the perfect pianist for later Springsteen tracks, but he could not have played on this one.
I also wish Bruce had done more over the years of the type of music he displayed on Wild... - songs like this and Kitty's Back. Each album of his is different from the last, but this one was different from one song to the next.
Bruce can never ... By: lateforthesky61. on 23 Oct 08, 05:59:07 Bruce can never best all the songs he wrote in his 20's. This paean to NYC will always stand as one of the great tributes to all the denizens of NYC. The beauty of this song and its romanticism will always grace a city filled with contradictions and memories: "Save your notes, don't spend 'em on the blues boy." Music and lyrics painfully, but realistically laid out from one of our greatest songwriters...

Any artist that can branch out and explore other types of music, to me, is a genius. He was trying new things, and he finally broke out w. an album with the E street band again (Magic). That turned out amazing to me.

I do agree that he ... By: JJSHIZZ. on 06 Aug 08, 02:31:40 I do agree that he was most brilliant between 73 and 82. BUT I don't think Bruce "sold out" with B-USA. He might have, but at the time, people didn't realize it with many other popular performers. I hope you get what i'm trying to say. But anyway, everyone has their opinions. I just don't believe bruce sold out. I think he was trying to "save" his career. And if you think about it, he did. However, this is a pretty good argument.
I don't think ... By: thefivesolas. on 05 Aug 08, 23:53:02 I don't think you're being rude. However, you made my point. Your argument was basically what Rockclassicramones made- Bruce was told to make a "pop" record that would sell- so he did. Says nothing about the QUALITY of the work in comparison. In other words, Bruce "sold out" for B-USA so he could made a "Ghost of Tom Joad". Ok, fair enough. But I do not take back my point 1 bit. I think Bruce was a his brilliant best from 73-82 IMO. A song here or there is good in later years, but in total- not.
I don't agree with ... By: JJSHIZZ. on 05 Aug 08, 02:56:34 I don't agree with you at all. Not to be rude. In the mid 80's, we had huge pop stars such as Modonna, prince, Michael Jackson, etc. Also, rock stars. Aerosmith, AC/DC, Guns n' Roses, and tons of hair bands. Bruce had to come out with hits like as you mentioned, " Dancing in the Dark." And there were many more on Born in the USA. If he didn't make all those hits, he would've been just a memory. OR he would've been a Bob Dylan-like musician. People would've forgotten about Bruce.
All musical opinion ... By: thefivesolas. on 29 Jul 08, 20:35:38 All musical opinion of "better" is comparing worms to bicycles.
It is fair to compare the two; they were made by the same artist. Yes, one is distinctly "pop" music. Great, Bruce showed he can make chirpy 'pop' music that the masses lapped up like a puppy. I do not care if Bruce could make club music like Chemical Borthers...if you don't like Chemical Brothers, who cares if he can do it or not?
I like the odd song from Bruce in later works, but IMO, he never was as brilliant as pre-'82.
It's impossible to ... By: BallofBase. on 29 Jul 08, 05:15:45 It's impossible to compare Born in the USA to Shuffle. Shuffle happens to be my fave also, but Springsteen's visions and intentions on each album were starkly different, and the musical style is entirely different. To say one was better than the other is like comparing worms and bicycles.
Plus, Born in the USA demonstrated Springsteen's extreme musical versatility. He excels in brooding, flawless epics, he excels in catchy, guitar-driven pop, and he excels in distrubing folk.

By: xotuesbellexo. on 25 Oct 08, 17:38:17 I have to say, regardless of what music you listen to, it's really rude to insult the people who make the music you don't like, like people who are saying that the Jonas Brothers are all "fags" and have "erectile dysfunctional dicks". And on the other hand, "elvis sucks ur? mothers cock" is ridiculous too.

I'm talking about the final stanza, with the lyric "The waitress I've been seeing lost her desire for me..." which is different from some versions, including all the lyric sites I've visited including ITunes. All those sites record the lyric as "...the angels have lost their desire for us..." Thoughts?

Younger musicians should look into this record to hear how much can be done in a 4-piece orchestration setting with hardly no effects or overdubs. The dynamics are within instruments and the band work like a combined(?) and balanced unit. A true gem.

So haunting. Chills me to the bone everytime and makes me cry in the melancholy minimalism of the instrumental repetition. It makes me dwell in the lonliness of my life.

Eum I do understand the acclaim for this album. It's good. But it would have been better if it was instrumental. There's good melodious riffs and breaks but the graveyard voice fucs it up for me. He looks like a junkie too.

They are VERY different. I'd just say that Talking Heads were more talented. Well...David Byrne anyways. That man is a genius beyond his years.
By: colossalkegan. on 20 Oct 08, 03:32:01
They're very different bands, and both great in their own way. Talking Heads had their frantic funk-garage rock, and Television had their tight, eccentric jazz-rock. Comparing Tom Verlaine's choppy improvised solos to Jerry Harrison's erratic keyboard fills or Fred Smith's basslines to Tina Weymouth's doesn't make a lot of sense, because both bands have their moments. I can't recall a Television song that reminds me of 'No Compassion' or a Talking Heads song that reminds me of 'Prove It.'

By: lladsbid. on 14 Oct 08, 18:57:48
its awesome but does suffer somewhat from art rock syndrome whereby every song is stretched out too far, if it was half the length it would be a true classic to rival anything by the stones or beatles, as is, however, its just really good

thing is, Television aren't a punk sort of band, or at least the songs that made it onto Marquee Moon and Adventure aren't punk. The reason so many people associate the group with classic punk acts was because they were probably the most talented band to come out of the CBGB scene and played at the same venues at the same times as those punk acts. However, listen to any of those punk groups alongside Television and tell me which group knows how to make beautiful, unique music.
